BACON BY THE BOOK

“I’ve always hoped to put over things as directly and rawly as I possibly can.”

Painter of violence, cruelty and tragedy, Francis Bacon is renowned for his triptychs – one of which is the most expensive in the world (“Three studies of Lucian Freud”) – and his tortured portraits, as if folded in texture of the canvas. His work shows his life, his friends, his admiration for Diego Vélasquez, Vincent van Gogh or Pablo Picasso …

The book deals in particular with the powerful link between Bacon’s artworks and literature, through works produced by Bacon during the last two decades of his work. The painting is stylistically marked by its simplification, by its intensification. His colors acquire a new depth, he uses a new chromatic register, yellow, pink, saturated orange.
